The third largest contributor to coral reef formations,
corals of the family Poritidae most commonly belong to the genus Porites.
Although commonly available to the reef aquarium trade, corals of the
genus Goniopora, dubbed
the 'Flowerpot Coral' (Goniopora
Stokesi and Goniopora
Djiboutiensis and others) have become notorious for their failure
to succeed long-term in reef tanks. While slightly better suited for captive
care, members of the Alveopora
genus are likely to suffer the same fate and should only be considered
by very knowledgeable reef aquarists.
