Similar in appearance to corals of the genus Leptoria,
and often confused by aquarium shops and hobbyists alike, corals of the
genus Platygyra include some of the most visually stunning species found.
The 'Maze Coral' (Platygyra
Lamellina and Platygyra
Daedalea) is always a favorite due to its caverns of neon green and
purplish-brown flesh. These corals do produce powerful stinging sweeper
tentacles, like other members of the family Faviidae, so care must be
taken in placing them with other SPS coral species. These corals are hardy,
but have been known to display tissue necrosis when subject to stress.
