Corals of the genus Hydnophora are easily identified
by the presence of a unique skeletal characteristic called the hydnophore.
Hydnophores are mound-like formations from which polyps extend. Hydnophoras
are often angular branches, such as those of the genus Australogyra.
But, make no mistake, corals of the genus Hydnophora are commonly believed
to be among the most powerfully aggressive of the stony corals, with sweeping
filaments. Although, careful placement and consideration to flow can make
these corals a safe and beautiful addition to any stony coral dominated
reef aquarium.
