Encrusting corals have little to no upward growth, but rather encompass
the surface of whatever they grow upon (in reef tanks, this is most often
live rock- but encrusting corals have been known to grow upon dead coral
skeletons, powerheads and other submerged hardware and even on aquarium
glass). Once one of the less popular coral formations, encrusting corals
have seen a recent increase in popularity mostly due to new colorful species
becoming available. The coral pictured above, for example, has been dubbed
the 'Superman Montipora'
because of its impressive coloration.
