Plates, Columns and Other SPS Corals

Plating stony corals are very popular in reef aquariums, despite the fact that they grow to be quite large and often shade corals beneath them. The most popular and readily available of the plating corals is the Montipora Capricornus, which comes in an impressive variety of colorations including bright orange and vibrant purple. The "Monti Cap", as it is commonly referred to, often grows into swirling concentric cups as is the case with the coral colony pictured above.
